What is the difference between plastic PS and PC ?

Why are the prices of PS and PC lamps in the market so different? Today, I will introduce the characteristics of two materials.

1. Polystyrene (PS)

• Property: Amorphous polymer, Shrinkage after molding less than 0.6; low density make the output 20% to 30% greater than the general material

• Advantages: low cost, transparent, dyeable, fixed size, high rigidity

• Disadvantages: high fragmentation, poor solvent resistance, temperature resistance

• Application: stationery, toys, Electrical appliance casing, styrofoam tableware

2. Polycarbonate (PC)

• Property: Amorphous thermoplastics

• Advantages: high strength and elastic modulus, high impact strength, wide operating temperature range, high transparency and free dyeing, high H.D.T., good fatigue resistance, good weather resistance, excellent Electrical characteristics, tasteless and odorless, harmless to the human body, health and safety, low molding shrinkage and good dimensional stability

• Disadvantages: Poor product design can easily cause internal stress problems

• Application :

√ Electronics: CDs, switches, home appliance housings, signal cannons, telephones

√ Car: bumpers, distribution boards, safety glass

√ Industrial parts: camera bodies, machine housings, helmets, diving goggles, safety lenses

3. Other situations

• The light transmittance of PS is 92%, while for PC is 88%.

• PC toughness is much better than PS, PS is brittle and can be easily broken, while PC is more resilient.

• The thermal deformation temperature of PC reaches 120 degrees, while PS is only about 85 degrees.

• The fluidity of the two is also very different. The fluidity of PS is better than of PC. PS can use point gates, while PC basically needs a large gate.

• The price of the two is also very different. Now normal PC costs more than 20 yuan, while PS costs only 11 yuan.

PS plastic refers to ClassⅠplastic that includes Styrene in the Macromolecular chain, and also include Styrene and Copolymers. It is soluble in Aromatic hydrocarbons, Chlorinated hydrocarbons, Aliphatic Ketones and esters, but can only swell in acetone.

PC is also called Polycarbonate, abbreviated as PC, is a colorless, transparent, amorphous thermoplastic material. The name comes from  the Internal CO3 group.

I hope it can help customers understand why there is a price difference between PC and PS. I also hope that customers will keep their eyes open when choosing lamps, don’t be fooled by the price. After all, you get what you pay for.

Liper as a professional lighting manufacturer, we are very strict in material selection, so you can choose and use it with confidence.
